UAE grabs 2 Guinness records in a day

FUJAIRAH — A sword-throwing expert and a traditional dance troupe powered the UAE to two spots in the Guinness World Records (GWR) in Fujairah on Friday.

Eighteen-year-old Hazaa Sulaiman Al Shehhi of Dibba, Fujairah, threw his sword up to a height of 21.275 metres in a sword-throwing competition at Fujairah Fort for a new world record. Also on Friday, in another record-breaking event, again for the GWR at the same venue, the largest traditional Emirati dance was performed with 285 people participating.

This feat smashed the existing record that was set at Dubai’s Global Village in 2008 when 221 young performers mesmerised a holiday crowd. The two world records were established as part of the Al Saif Traditional Sword Competition, sponsored by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Hamad was handed over a certificate of the two new records by Tarika Vara, an arbiter from GWR, at his palace in the Madaba area, for the highest tossed sword in the air.

It was the first time the a sword thrown into the air and caught by its handle will have been measured for an entry into the record books.

Shehhi was selected by the competition judges to represent his emirate for his technique. participation norms state that participants must use a sword measuring at least 70 centimetres in length.

Shaikh Abdullah bin Saif Al Sharqi, general supervisor of the sword championship, said: “With the achievements of the sword championship in its first year, our responsibility doubles. The first achievement is the largest group of entrants who came to perform the Al Razfa traditional dance and the second is the highest sword throw which is considered a real translation to the objectives of the championship that could boost and consolidate the national identity among the young generation.”
